Taree Zameen Par

Director: Aamir Khan
Producer: Aamir Khan,
Co-producers: Ajay Bijli and Sanjeev Bijli
Star Cast: Aamir Khan, Darsheel Safary, Tanay Cheda, Sachet Engineer, Tisca Chopra and Vipin Shrama
Music: Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy

The entire movie revolves around the life of a child, Ishaan (Darsheel Safary), who is shown to be suffering from dyslexia. Through Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan tries to make us see the world, as it looks from the eyes of a child, who is a bit different from the other kids of his age.

The whole concept of Taare Zameen Par is quite good.Unlike majority of the films of this genre, Taare Zameen Partotallyfocuses on the child, it is all about.

As far as performances are concerned, Darsheel Safary definitely deserves applauds. He does complete justice to his character of a dyslexic child and gives us no reason to complain. He manages to convince the audience completely and is like the show stealer.

In short, Taare Zameen Par is a good effort to explore the sensitive issues. If you want to see good performances and are bored of the mushy scenes and exaggerated melodrama, this movie is just for you!

Now, if you are wondering what it is the story; do not go by the name, because it is surely not about any space program. Rather, it is the unconventional story of a special child. The movie revolves around Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary), who is an eight year old boy, living in the world of his own. Colors, fish, dogs and kites, play on his mind, driving him away from things like home work, marks, and neatness. This is certainly not appreciated by the brainy adults around him and he is packed off to a boarding school in order to be disciplined.
This does not bring any change in him; moreover he is traumatized by the separation from his family. Things around seem to change, when a new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) appears on the screen. He transforms the whole scenario, bringing joy and optimism in the lives of the students. Breaking all the rules, he sets them free and encourages them to think, imagine and dream. All the kids in the school are excited by the flight of freedom except Ishaan. This is realized by Nikumbh, who then puts effort to know the reason why. Finally, with time, he helps Ishaan discover his real world.

Terminator Salvation's

After a brief recap of events leading up to Terminator Salvation's present day - post-apocalyptic 2018 - we find Skynet and its Terminators, Hunter-Killers, Hydrobots, and other cruel machines have left the planet a bombed out wasteland, with just scattered pockets of human survivors. Members of the Resistance (they wear red arm bands as a badge of courage) fight off the machines in organized assaults, but we humans are not winning this war.

John Connor, not yet the leader of the Resistance, is disliked by the Resistance's head guy (played by Michael Ironside) but respected by the grunts on the ground. Along with his right-hand man Barnes (Common) and his eight months pregnant wife, Kate (Howard), John Connor works on hunting down Skynet's machines. But an encounter with Marcus Wright completely changes John Connor's perception of Skynet's capabilities.

Marcus is a hybrid with a human heart and brain housed in a skin-clad mechanical body, a creature - apparently of Skynet's making - that Connor never knew existed. Resistance fighter Blair Williams (Bloodgood) trusts Marcus - he saved her life - but the Connors aren't as accepting. Marcus is declared an enemy, Blair has to rescue him from being put to death, and that sets up a confrontation between John and Marcus that changes the course of both men's lives. John and Marcus discover they share a goal: to keep Kyle Reese (Yelchin) alive. Kyle's been captured by Skynet and John Connor knows there is no other option than to rescue him. The future of mankind is depending on it and if it means he has to try and trust a machine, then he's willing to go that far in order to guarantee Kyle's survival.

Monsters Vs Aliens

Susan (Witherspoon) is ready to say I do to her narcissistic weatherman fiancé when out of the clear blue sky falls a meteorite. Despite the fact she's dressed in her wedding gown, Susan trudges down the hill to get a closer look. But getting up close and personal with a meteorite on your wedding day is never a good idea. The substance contained inside the meteorite causes her to mutate into a 47 foot tall woman at the most inopportune time (as she's poised to exchange vows with her creepy husband-to-be).

The military shows up (don't ask how they knew they'd be dealing with an out-of-control bridezilla), captures this now gigantic woman, and locks her away in a secret government holding facility alongside other 'monsters'. These other monsters are used to being locked away from the public as they've been caged up for decades, but Susan (newly renamed Ginormica to match her enlarged status) is immensely unhappy and willing to do anything to get out and go home. She's even willing to have Dr. Cockroach (three guesses what he looks like and the first two don't count) experiment on her to see if he can return her to her normal size.

But when Earth is threatened by first a robot from outer space and then a squidish alien who calls himself Gallaxhar (voiced by Rainn Wilson), the caretaker to the monsters, General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland), suggests letting the monsters free to take on the aliens. And so the battle begins as Ginormica, the gelatinous one-eyed blob known as B.O.B., Dr Cockroach, a Swamp Thing look-alike called The Missing Link, and the gigantic insect labeled Insectosaurus are the people of Earth's only hope. And yes, there's a lesson in there about how it's okay to be different.

Monsters vs Aliens is beautifully animated, and even the muted colors you see through the annoying 3-D glasses are sparkling enough to enliven the screen.

What Just Happened

What Just Happened is a winningly sharp comedy about two nail-biting, back-stabbing, roller-coaster weeks in the world of a middle-aged Hollywood producer -- as he tries to juggle an actual life with an outrageous series of crises in his day job.

A money maker, an ego buster, a bad news breaker, an artistic champion, a loyal husband, an all-knowing father, not to mention sexy, youthful and tuned-in – everything except for the one thing he and all the preposterously behaved people he’s surrounded by really are: bumbling human beings just trying to survive by any means necessary. Ben (DE NIRO) is already in over his head trying to balance the tug-of-war of having two ex-wives and two different families with his latest business venture – the boldly “visionary” movie Fiercely starring Sean Penn (SEAN PENN) – when everything that can go wrong goes completely screwy.

Fiercely looks like an audience-offending flop which draws the ire of iron-gloved studio chief Lou (CATHERINE KEENER), who forces him into tangling with the film’s rebellious and drug-addled director Jeremy (MICHAEL WINCOTT). Meanwhile, he’s confused and bewitched by his ex Kelly (ROBIN WRIGHT PENN) who can’t make up her mind about him; shocked by his daughter Zoe (KRISTEN STEWART), who seems to have grown up overnight; infuriated by his screenwriter friend Scott (STANLEY TUCCI) who’s trying to make a deal with him while making moves on his former wife; horrified by a hirsute Bruce Willis (BRUCE WILLIS) and flummoxed by Willis’ nebbishy agent Dick (JOHN TURTURRO), who’s scared to death of his own clients.

Somehow amidst all the madness, treachery, deceit, runaway egos, rampant commercialism, personal politics and atrocious behavior of America’s dream-making machinery, Ben has to find a way not just to make it to Cannes with a finished film, but to cope . . .

What Just Happened is based on the acclaimed, bestselling memoir by veteran Hollywood producer Art Linson, who wrote the screenplay and produced the film with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. The executive producers are Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban. The behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer StĂ©phane Fontaine (Talk To Me, The Beat My Heart Skipped), editor Hank Corwin (The New World), production designer Stefania Cella (Man of the Year) and composer Marcelo Zarvos (The Good Shepherd). The film is set to a soundtrack that mixes the classic cinematic sounds of Ennio Morricone with the songs of Nick Drake, Citizen Cope, Dire Straits, Bebel Gilberto and Nina Simone, among others. --© Magnolia Pictures

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is a sweeping, hopeful story about a boy, Jamal, in the slums of India who becomes an instant celebrity after he wins millions on India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. Jamal, being interrogated for fraud by the police, who cannot believe that a "slumdog" orphan could possibly have known the answers to the questions on the show.

In the police station, where Jamal (Dev Patel) is tortured to get him to confess how he cheated, to his appearance on the show, to the events throughout his youth that led to him knowing the answers to the game show questions. How did a boy growing up in the slums amid piles of garbage and filth know which US president is on the one hundred dollar bill, or who invented the revolver?

Film takes us back through Jamal's life story to show us the mean-streets education that led to him knowing the answers, while managing to avoid making the set-up feel contrived.

The scenes that take place during the game show are a masterwork of interplay and intellect, as Jamal duels verbally with wealthy, narcissistic host Prem Kumar (veteran Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor), who's sort of a Hindi version of Regis Philbin. There's a certain level of class struggle going on within the framework of the game show, pitting the wealthy, arrogant host against the soft-spoken, affable kid from the slums. Kumar, fearing that the eminently likable young man might detract from his own popularity with the audience, taunts Jamal for being a poor chaiwalla (tea bearer) and subtly -- and not so subtly -- tries to get Jamal to cash in and end his winning streak. What Kumar doesn't get is that Jamal's not really in it for the money at all.

The heart of the film, though, is the thread of love and friendship between Jamal and another young orphan, Latika, who's befriended by Jamal and gruffly tolerated by his older brother. The trio call themselves "The Three Musketeers" -- Jamal and his brother having been enraptured by the classic tale when they attended school before their mother died. Fate, life, and adults preying on the vulnerable youth of Mumbai's slums conspire to keep Jamal and Latika apart, but Jamal never sways from his belief that he and Latika are destined to be together.

This love story, interwoven throughout the film, lends a classical, metaphorical level to the film that adds depth to its mainstream-audience friendly, accessible surface. Orphaned children in places like Mumbai are easy prey for adults who force or coerce them into servitude as beggars, prostitutes, and criminals. Jamal's older brother succumbs to the lure of crime as a path out of poverty; Jamal, on the other hand, does what he has to in order to survive -- when you're five years old, homeless and starving while the adults around you kick you around like a dog for merely trying to scrounge enough to keep from dying, the morality of theft and ownership doesn't really amount to much -- but he never loses his sense of fairness, justice and compassion.

Jamal's pursuit of Latika is single-minded; She is the only thing in his hard-knock life that he's ever cared about other than his mother and brother. Even when Latika gives up and resigns herself to the life of abuse that it seems fate has mapped out for her, Jamal is her white knight, relentlessly fighting to free her from the prison in which beauty and destitution have trapped her.

There's sadness and tragedy within Slumdog Millionaire -- starvation, genocide, child prostitution and overwhelming oppression -- but there's humor, humanity and dignity as well. Boyle, stepping outside the UK to focus his lens on India, seems to have freed himself here to bring his brilliance as a director to its fullest fruition. Slumdog Millionaire is Boyle's best film to date, which is saying quite a lot; He's made a joyous, fun, and wonderfully accessible film that should play well in Toronto before moving on to wider release.
